Over the past four decades Spectrum Coatings has grown from a two-brother sales business to become one of Manitoba’s leading industrial and automotive paint supply specialists.
As PPG Industries’ largest, and only platinum level, distributor in Manitoba, Spectrum has built strong customer relationships with many small, medium and large automotive and industrial companies – growing into industry leaders.
Spectrum doesn’t just sell great paint, we make sure our team is fully trained on best practices our customers use in their shops to get the best finishes and service. With this expertise backed by PPG’s high quality products, we can advise our customers on how to implement the highest application and service standards.
These standards give Spectrum an edge in Manitoba, as our knowledge, safety and cleanliness have exceeded MPI’s new (2016) service centre requirements since 2010. The business is also quickly becoming a leader in using environmentally friendly products, as PPG has begun using water soluble paints for its coatings. These paints are made up of 80 per cent water, which is used as a dispersal agent for the resin.
Led by President and CEO Murray Doerksen and Winnipeg Regional Manager Tim Doerksen, our company now has 20 employees and offices in Winnipeg, Brandon and Winkler. We plan to continue to expand across the province to keep pace with our growing list of large and small automotive and industrial customers.
Spectrum Coatings is proud to call itself the paint specialist in the Winnipeg & Brandon area. A family-owned business since 1976, Spectrum Coatings has a deep understanding of paint products, whether you need automotive paint supplies for collision repair, industrial equipment coatings or specialty products for specific application.

Murray’s passion for the coatings business has led him to become one of the most knowledgeable automotive and industrial paint supply specialists in Manitoba, exceeding industry standards in service, quality and safety. Spectrum’s expertise with paint began shortly after Murray took over the family business in 1984. A chance meeting with PPG Industries was the start of a strong business relationship that continues today. Working as PPG’s only platinum dealer in the province means Murray and his team receive superior training, putting them one step ahead of competitors and allowing them to earn the respect and repeat business from an ever growing roster of clients.
Tim currently leads Spectrum Coatings with a clear-cut vision for the future – which includes growing Spectrum’s client list across the province. His training through PPG’s Refinish program and experience working in all facets of the business has allowed him to stay up on trends and quickly become a leader. Since becoming Winnipeg Regional Manager in 2009, Tim has led Spectrum to expand its footprint within the automotive industry. Tim recognizes a good quality product and understands how to help his customers excel in their businesses. This helps him build strong, lasting customer relationships.
Founded in 1976 under the name TW Pike (Tina, Wilma, Peter and Ike Doerksen – the brothers and their wives) the brothers began selling automotive supplies out of the back of a station wagon.
It wasn’t until Peter’s son, current owner Murray Doerksen, took over the company in 1984 that they began to sell paint. It was then that Doerksen partnered with PPG Industries to provide paint products to automotive and industrial companies across the province.
Murray learned the value of creating good relationships with vendors, employees and customers from his father and uncle. While the company was growing he made sure to build a genuine connection with each employee and customer he worked with, something he believes is more valuable than profit.
He knows a good manager will hire people who can do the job better than he can, with good attitudes, allowing the business to run like a well-oiled machine.
Building on the family legacy, two of his three sons are actively involved in running the business today – Colin in administration and Tim as the Winnipeg Regional Manager.
